When Should I Bring a Host Gift, If at All?

Bringing a host gift is always a thoughtful gesture.

Small tokens like a bottle of wine, gourmet chocolates or a stylish kitchen accessory are welcome at dinner parties or casual get-togethers. If you’re attending something more casual, like a potluck or backyard barbecue, it’s still nice—but not mandatory—to show appreciation with a simple, thoughtful gift.

Tip: Sur La Table’s host gift selection offers plenty of stylish and useful ideas.

How Do I Balance Greeting Guests with Making Final Preparations?

The key to balancing greeting guests and handling last-minute preparations is advance planning. Try to complete most preparations before guests arrive.

When that isn’t possible, keep easy-to-assemble appetizers and cocktails ready. That way, you can briefly step away to finish tasks while guests mingle.

Should Guests Help Clean Up After a Dinner Party?

Guests are not obligated to clean, but many will naturally offer.

Graciously accept minimal assistance like clearing dishes or packing leftovers. However, save deeper cleaning for after guests depart to maintain a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere.

Is It Rude to Ask Guests to Take Off Their Shoes?

Requesting guests to remove their shoes is perfectly acceptable, especially if it’s your home’s norm.

Clearly communicate this in advance by mentioning it casually when you extend invitations. Keep slippers or cozy socks handy to enhance comfort and hospitality.

How Do I Handle Guests Who Arrive After the Indicated Start Time of My Event?

Always greet late arrivals warmly, ensuring they feel welcome.

If the delay affects meal timing, consider keeping dishes warm or plating food individually. Flexibility and warmth ensure latecomers and timely guests alike enjoy your gathering.
